First, make sure to include all relevant details when you post your missing pet:
- Location (city/state)
- Description (male/female, name, color, age, size)
- Date the animal went missing
- Contact info: phone number or email address
Second, READ THROUGH ALL THE INFORMATION BELOW (13 steps)
1. Act quickly. Many pets are located within 24 hours; the more time that goes by will decrease chances for a successful recovery.
2. Contact animal control immediately and file a lost pet report. Visit our directory of local facilities. If you are in Delaware, file a report with the state-wide lost/found listing at https://animalservices.delaware.gov
3. SCENT ITEMS: place some items of your clothing in the area where the pet was last seen to give them them something familiar to return to.
4. Make a flier which needs to include picture of your pet, city, state and your phone number.
5. "WALK AND TALK" while passing out fliers. There is NO SUBSTITUTE for feet on the ground. Use 4-per-page mini fliers to give to everyone you see while posting larger ones throughout the neighborhood.
6. Tag vehicles with glass markers to turn cars into mobile billboards. This is great way to notify the neighborhood quickly as you are out searching. http://www.missingpetpartnership.org/recovery-tagging.php
7. There is strength in numbers. Gather your friends and neighbors to help make fliers, phone calls, walk the area, etc. You will need help to act efficiently and cover all the search tasks.
8. Order a findtoto.com alert which calls homes in your area. It's a terrific way to get the word out and notify the community quickly.
9. Put a sign in front of your house so if someone finds your pet they know who is missing it.
10. Change your profile picture and cover photo to your pet's flier
11. Diversify: reach as many people as possible across a variety of news and social sites. Post on Craigslist, delegate someone to get the flier on facebook pages for local shelter and businesses. Reach out to neighborhood groups, online bulletin boards, vet offices, pet groomers, local businesses, etc.
12. MAKE YOUR FACEBOOK POSTS PUBLIC. Folks cannot help or share if you have it set to private.
13. Follow our posts on the page as people may comment or report sightings.
Make sure to go over this information with your search team and keep everyone updated. Good luck!
