Once Your Lost Pet Has Been Found: Suggestions for Pet Parents

Happy endings are what we all live for. After your pet has been safely recovered there are things to do AND prevention tips to consider.

WHEN YOUR PET IS FOUND: Steps to follow and some general advice covering many of the situations which often are the cause of lost animals.

  • Notify all the places where you posted a missing pet so they can update their listings.
  • Remove all fliers and signage promptly!
  • Get your pet micro-chipped if they are not already.
  • If they have a chip, confirm that it is correctly listed with the right phone number, address, etc with the registration company.
  • Make sure that the ID tags on their collar have a correct phone number.
  • If your dog got loose after slipping out of his collar (which is a very common event), consider using a different type or a harness to avoid that problem.
  • Swap out the retractable leash for a standard 6'. You have no control with a retractable one and if you are using the 6' lead correctly you have one hand on it and can still have your other wrist through the loop; if you fall or your dog startles it's far less likely for them to get loose.
We hope you will never need to worry about a missing pet but accidents can happen to anyone, at any time. We can promise that no matter how careful you are, there is ALWAYS SOMETHING THAT CAN HAPPEN. The items listed above are just insurance to give you and your pet the best possible chances of a quick recovery.
