10 Ways to Support your Local Animal Shelters and Rescues

You've heard us here at Lost Pet PR say, probably more times than you could count, "Together We Accomplish More". There are few places that applies more than in animal welfare, local shelters and rescues. COMMUNITY is at the heart of our volunteer-powered site and it goes further than just counseling owners of lost pets. Every single time we as a group of people come together to each contribute something - no matter how small - the rewards are greater.

Take a food drive for example, the kind that our local area holds from time to time for families in need, and just see how the power of so many individuals each bringing in a few items can add up. It's no different with animal organizations and given the overwhelming numbers of unwanted animals and lack of responsibiity that exists with pets, there's no other way that we can effectively address this situation. The paragraphs below were written during a time when over 300 dogs were pulled from a puppy mill operation, but scroll down and see "Ten Ways Your Family Can Get Involved" for some ideas on how to lend a paw.

A number of people have mentioned donations and help to assist with the 300+ dogs rescued last week in Wicomico County, MD. While initially they all went to Wicomico Humane Society in Salisbury, they have now begun transitioning out to various other shelters and rescues.

This means that while you can still visit the Humane Society's website to donate and/or see what their needs are, it's possible that your local shelter may have just taken in some of these dogs as well. As we have always done, we encourage you to get involved with your local facilities and to support their rescue and fundraising efforts. There are so many things YOU can do and we see it over and over: that the more people focus on what's right in their neighborhood, the better off the whole community is.

Seeing the good which comes from participating in such events and learning to help others is such a valuable thing for our young people. Kids learn what they watch and we see how local families who are involved with area shelters benefit the community. Please consider becoming a part of this - not just by going online once but by stopping by occasionally, walking the dogs, getting to be part of the process.

Here are ten great ideas for how you
and your family can get involved!

1) Hold a donation party to celebrate a birthday or other important event and gather supplies for the animals as gifts.

2) Walk the walk. Go to your local humane society and sign up to help exercise shelter dogs.

3) Collect items that are always needed such as canned dog/puppy and cat/kitten food. Challenge your friends to buy a few cans each week to bring over and watch it add up in a big box.

4) Hold a neighborhood bake sale, have the kids help out and then let them go to present the funds to the shelter.

5), Ask a local restaurant to host a fundraising night where a portion of the proceeds are given to charity. Remember, if you set something like this in motion you gotta participate so invite lots of people and make it an awesome event.

6) Invite your neighbors to hold a group yard sale and donate all the money to your local shelter.

7) Place a donation box in your business with a sign and have printed lists of what the animals need. Have your employees deliver it each time it's filled up and ready to go.

8) It's never to early to learn about giving. Ask your kids how they want to help the dogs and cats and think of cool ways to raise money or put on a fundraiser.

9) Use your awesome talents to make a difference. Volunteer your skills for event promotion, donate some time to make signs, paint, build a doggy exercise area or provide a helping hand with repairs.

10) Judge less, do more. Those who work in animal control and at shelters aren't in it for the money. Before you criticize, walk a day in their shoes, do the work they do every day and see the things they see.

Back to basics we go with something that's echoed through our work with this page and our community; "together we accomplish more".

Thanks for getting involved.
Thank you for being a part of this.
